The City of Markham and the broader York Region community are mourning the loss of Khalid Usman, a respected chartered accountant, former Markham councillor, philanthropist, and tireless community advocate whose decades of service touched countless lives across Canada and beyond.

Khalid Usman passed away surrounded by the love and prayers of family, friends, and community members who admired his unwavering dedication to public service and humanitarian causes. His passing marks the loss of a remarkable leader whose contributions extended far beyond politics and professional achievement.

For 14 years, Khalid served as a Markham councillor, helping shape the growth and development of one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities. Throughout his career, he held leadership and volunteer roles with numerous organizations, including the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation, the Frank Scarpitti Charitable Foundation, Markham District Energy, the York Region Community Foundation, the Markham Board of Trade, and the Unionville Home Society Foundation. He also served on the Police Services Board and chaired the Committee of Adjustment, among many other responsibilities.

Beyond his civic involvement, Khalid was widely recognized as a champion of interfaith dialogue, intercultural understanding, and community engagement. He was a passionate advocate for the Pakistani and Muslim communities and worked tirelessly to build bridges between cultures and faiths while promoting inclusion and mutual respect.

His humanitarian efforts reached across continents. He played a significant role in fundraising initiatives supporting hospitals, educational programs, disaster relief efforts, and healthcare projects in both Canada and Pakistan. His work helped support institutions such as Markham Stouffville Hospital, Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital in Lahore, the Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, and educational initiatives that expanded access to schooling for children in underserved communities.

Friends and colleagues remember Khalid as a larger-than-life figure whose kindness, generosity, energy, and sense of humor inspired everyone around him. He dedicated his life to serving others and improving the lives of people regardless of background or circumstance.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Dr. Abida, daughters Hina, Rabiah, and Maria, grandchildren, extended family members, and a vast circle of friends, colleagues, and community members who will forever cherish his memory.

As loved ones gather for Janazah prayers, burial services, and memorial gatherings, they do so with gratitude for a life defined by service, compassion, and leadership. Khalid Usman’s legacy will continue through the countless lives he touched and the communities he helped strengthen.

May Allah forgive his shortcomings, reward his good deeds, and grant him the highest ranks of Jannat-ul-Firdous. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
